With distressing news of war and conflict from different parts of the world becoming increasingly and worryingly common, we ordinary people can only hope that peace comes sooner than later, and that we never have to find ourselves in the midst of such bloodshed.
But have you ever wondered, in the unfortunate event, that war does breakout, would our insurance policies cover our losses arising from such misfortune?
Life Insurance
YES, in case a person dies due to war, modern life insurance policies usually pay out the Sum Assured in case of death due to war.
BUT also other rider benefits such as Accidental Death Benefit or Critical Illness Benefit explicitly exclude war or war-related activities.
Ideally, life insurance should cover death “due to any cause” and it does! However, there are still some limitations to the scope of “any cause” such as death due to participation in war or war-like activities would not be covered.
Health Insurance
What if you need medical treatment in times of war? Would your health insurance cover such treatment?
YES, but only if such treatment is required for injury or diseases not caused indirectly or directly by war.
WHY? Your health insurance exclusions explicitly state “Injury or diseases directly or indirectly caused by or arising from or attributable to war, invasion, act of foreign enemy, war like operation (whether war be declared or not).”
Motor Insurance
Your car or motorbike is something that’s more exposed to external elements than perhaps anything else (just like your home).
One of the Exclusions in your motor insurance policy wording mentions “any accidental loss damage and/or liability directly or indirectly or proximately or remotely occasioned by or contributed by or traceable to or arising out of or in connection with War…”
In other words, any damage or loss to your vehicle WILL NOT be covered if it arises out of war.
Home Insurance
Your home, perhaps your greatest and most valued investment. Would your home and valuables be compensated for in the event of a loss due to war?
One of the Exclusions in your home insurance policy wording states “Loss or damage directly or indirectly, proximately or remotely occasioned by or contributed to or traceable to or happening through in consequence of war, invasion, act of foreign enemy hostilities or war like operations (whether war be declared or not) civil war, civil commotion, mutiny, rebellion, revolution, insurrection, conspiracy, military or usurped power.”
Hence, any loss or damage to your house as a result of war WILL NOT be paid for by the insurance company.
Cyber Insurance
Warfare today is no longer limited to ‘boots on the ground’ but increasingly involves cyberwarfare to harm the IT infrastructure, governments and citizens of entire nations. Should war break out in such a manner, would your retail cyber insurance policy cover it?
Most cyber insurance policies explicitly mention that “The policy does not cover claims directly or indirectly caused by or arising from War, Terrorism, looting and Governmental Acts”
Thus, an Insurer WILL NOT pay for any losses arising out of war.
