What Happens If Firecrackers Cause a Fire? Is It Covered
As India prepares for Diwali this October, the streets will glow with lamps, sweets will be exchanged, and fireworks will light up the night sky. But with these fireworks comes danger. Every year, across India, people suffer injuries, property damage, and even lose their lives in firecracker accidents.
In 2025 already, a harrowing incident in Banda saw an 8-year‑old boy die when a firecracker exploded in his mouth.
Meanwhile in Tamil Nadu, the Virudhunagar district, a major firecracker manufacturing hub, has witnessed multiple explosions, for example, on 17 February 2024, a factory blast killed 10 and injured several others. Such incidents underscore the real financial, physical, and emotional toll of fireworks-related mishaps.
Given this backdrop, you may wonder: If damage or injury from firecrackers happens, is it covered by insurance?
Motor Insurance
Motor insurance in India offers two main types: third-party liability (mandatory) and comprehensive (Third party liability + Own Damage). In a comprehensive motor policy, standard perils include fire, explosions, and external damage.
If a firecracker causes fire damage to your vehicle, such loss could be covered. But there are a few caveats:
- The policyholder must have opted for comprehensive cover, not just third‑party cover.
- The cause may be scrutinised: if the damage is found to be from negligence (for example, storing fireworks in vehicle) it may be excluded.
Health Insurance
If a person is injured in a fireworks accident – burns, wounds, hearing loss, etc., would health insurance pay?
Generally, yes, if the policy covers accidental injuries and hospitalisation. Firecracker injuries would fall under “accident” or “external injuries” clauses, as long as:
- The injury is accidental (i.e. not a self-inflicted or normal wear-and-tear age-related event).
- The policy excludes certain hazardous activities (some health plans may have exclusions for dangerous acts or fireworks.)
Some insurers have even launched “firecracker insurance / accident cover” specifically for the festival period. For example, Bajaj’s “Firecracker Insurance” offers accidental hospitalisation, disability, and loss-of-income coverage for firecracker accidents. Thus, beyond general health insurance, these short-term, event-specific policies provide targeted protection against firecracker injuries.
Property / Home Insurance
If fireworks damage your home, e.g., a spark causes a fire, an explosion shatters windows, or a cracker burns your home down, would your home insurance policy cover it?
Yes, under certain conditions:
- A standard Fire & Special Perils policy or a home insurance policy with fire coverage typically includes damage caused by fire, explosions, implosions, etc.
- The policy may cover structural damage, contents, and sometimes relocation / additional living expenses if the home becomes uninhabitable.
But again, conditions apply:
- The damage must result from an insured peril (fire, explosion) and not from excluded acts (intentional damage, negligence beyond policy terms).
Life Insurance
In case of a fatal accident due to firecrackers, life insurance policies may come into play.
- If the insured dies due to the accident (e.g., explosion, burns), a life insurance policy (term, whole life, etc.) would typically pay the sum assured to beneficiaries.
- If there is an accidental death rider, the accidental death sum assured will additionally be payable under that rider.
However:
- The cause of death must not fall into exclusions like self-harm, illegal acts, or hazardous activities explicitly excluded in the policy.
- The insurer may require proof / post‑mortem / investigation to confirm cause.
As Diwali approaches, it’s natural to anticipate light, joy, and festivity. But it’s also a time to be aware of the importance of safety and the risks from firecrackers. When it comes to insurance:
- Make sure you are adequately insured and aware of your policy wordings
- Maintain safe distance from fireworks, keep fire extinguishers handy. Call the fire brigade and emergency services, if necessary.
- In case of an incident, document everything (photos, videos), and inform your insurer promptly.
