DEADLY EARTHQUAKES & INSURANCE
THE ALEPPO EARTHQUAKE – On Oct. 11, 1138, the ground under the Syrian city of Aleppo shook violently. The magnitude of the quake is lost to time. It is reported that city was razed to ground. Estimated death toll over 230,000.
THE TANGSHAN EARTHQUAKE – At 3:42 a.m. on July 28, 1976, the Chinese city of Tangshan was razed to the ground by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake – the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Tangshan, an industrial city suffered over 240,000 casualties.
THE INDIAN OCEAN EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI – A 9.1 magnitude earthquake struck undersea off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, on Dec. 26, 2004. The quake created a massive tsunami that killed over 230,000.
A typical FIRE INSURANCE POLICY states – “Loss, destruction or damage directly caused by Storm, Cyclone, Typhoon, Tempest, Hurricane, Tornado, Flood or Inundation excluding those resulting from earthquake, Volcanic eruption or other convulsions of nature.
However, earthquake cover is given as an “add on cover”. In that case, the words “excluding those resulting from earthquake, volcanic eruption or other convulsions of nature” stand deleted.
