Essex-based insurer’s Immaculate Conception Insurance Policy
Women’s Day – In 2000, Essex-based insurance company Britishinsurance.com took out a £1 million insurance policy on three sisters. The policy would pay out if they conceived immaculately. This means this insurance was created to protect women who find themselves pregnant quite unexpectedly and without having ‘done the deed’. Thus, if any of the sisters conceived of child, the insurance company would pay £1 million. In other words, £1 Million is paid to cover the cost of raising Christ. This caused an uproar amongst the catholic church.
The biggest problem with the policy (and all policies for that matter), is that the burden of proof lies with the insured. That is, should one of the sisters conceive in such a manner described above, it’s their duty to prove it. Otherwise, they get nothing.
The amount of £1 million was to cover the costs of raising the child (even though Joseph apparently did it on a carpenter’s salary). The girls were paying £100 a year for the policy. The public found out about it and with serious complaints from the Catholic Church, the policy was withdrawn in 2006.
