You have seen this picture. Everyone has. Or at least everyone who has had a chance to use Windows XP before it was obsolete.
This image is titled Bliss, and it is the default Windows wallpaper on their XP operating system. Over the years it became the most viewed image of all time. The wallpaper was so popular that many people never bothered to change it as the default.
This picture was taken by Charles O’Rear, a former National Geographic photographer. O’Rear sold it to Corbis — a digital imaging licensing company owned by Bill Gates. When it came time for the developers to pick a stock image for their wallpaper, they settled on Bliss.
But Microsoft wanted to buy all the rights to this image, and in return they offered O’Rear a payment “in the low six figures.” O’Rear then had to send the original film and sign the agreement, but there was trouble. None of the courier or delivery services were willing to undertake this shipment because of the sheer value involved. Why? They simply did not have enough insurance to do so!
What did Microsoft do?
They simply had O’Rear deliver it personally by paying for his trip.
