John Grisham’s bestseller from 1995, The Rainmaker is a thrilling legal drama involving a corrupt insurance company and an idealistic, young lawyer, Rudy.
Having lost a potential opportunity at a law firm, he resorts to becoming an associate to an ‘ambulance chaser’ – a stereotypical lawyer who follows ambulances to hospitals attempting to find clients.
This is how he stumbles upon a massive and complex insurance scam through his elderly clients Dot and Buddy Black, whose son, Donny Ray, is fighting a tough battle against leukemia, and his only chance of survival is a bone marrow transplant.
But guess what? Their insurer refuses to pay up.
The story follows a classic David vs. Goliath theme wherein a small-time amateur lawyer goes up against a giant insurance company and its legal army.
The book went on to become a bestseller, and it was not long before it was adapted into a movie which also saw massive success. The Rainmaker (1997) stars Matt Damon, Danny DeVito, Claire Danes amongst others and was directed by the legendary Francis Ford Coppola.
