India’s festivals are among the most joyful experiences on the calendar. They are also among the most dangerous. Short term festival life insurance could provide temporary protection during these festive celebrations.

On 23 August 2026, just three weeks before this year’s Ganesh Chaturthi festival began, a 3,000-kilogram Ganesha idol collapsed onto a crowd in Mumbai during an arrival ceremony, killing two people and injuring five others, including two young children.

During Ganesh Visarjan in Maharashtra in 2025, at least 10 people died, from drownings in rivers, and from an electrocution incident in Mumbai’s Kurla where a hanging electric wire touched a Ganpati idol during the immersion procession, killing one and injuring five others.

During the 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, a crowd crush in the early hours of January 29 killed at least 30 people and injured 60 more during the most auspicious bathing day of the world’s largest religious gathering.

On Diwali 2025 in Chennai, illegally stored firecrackers exploded inside a residential house, killing four people. Between 2014 and 2023, India recorded approximately 1,489 fireworks-related accidents, resulting in 1,469 deaths, and 169 deaths from fireworks in 2023 alone.

These are recurring patterns across every major Indian festival season be it Ganesh Chaturthi, Diwali, Holi, Navratri, Kumbh or various other festivals. Millions of ordinary people face elevated and specific risks during these periods, with no dedicated financial protection in place for most of them.

Short-Term festival life insurance

The concept is simple, a short-duration life cover, purchased for the specific period of a festival, at a price accessible to ordinary families.

The pilgrim insurance model has already proven it works at scale. The Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board provides ₹10 lakh accident cover to all registered pilgrims for the duration of the annual yatra. The Travancore Devasom Board funds free accident insurance for Sabarimala pilgrims. During the 2025 Jagannath Rath Yatra, registered devotees in Puri received ₹5 lakh of accident cover for the duration of the festival. Maha Kumbh 2025 saw ICICI Lombard and PhonePe offer individual micro-policies starting at ₹59 for pilgrims travelling by train or bus.

The difference with festival life insurance is that it would be available to anyone, not just registered pilgrims, and would be bought independently rather than bundled with a pilgrimage registration. A family in Mumbai watching the Ganesh procession from the roadside, a group attending Navratri garba celebrations, children bursting Diwali crackers at home: all face real, elevated risks during festival seasons. None of them currently have a product designed for that specific period.

A festival life insurance policy might look like this:

  • Coverage: accidental death + permanent total disability + hospitalisation benefit
  • Sum insured options: ₹5 lakh / ₹10 lakh / ₹25 lakh
  • Duration: 3 days / 7 days / 10 days, aligned with specific festival calendars
  • Premium range: ₹25-₹199 per person, depending on coverage and duration
  • Eligibility: individuals aged 18-65; family floater option extending cover to spouse and up to 3 children
  • Distribution: bought digitally via insurer app, BIMA Sugam portal, or embedded at event registration

In September 2026, Former YSRCP MP Vijayasai Reddy’s recent call for Tirupati Devasthanam to raise pilgrim insurance from ₹2 lakh to ₹10 lakh reflects that existing coverage levels don’t reflect the actual financial impact of losing a family member or suffering disability during a festival.

Underwriting Guidelines for speedy issuance

For such a product to work at scale, the underwriting process must be instant. Festival insurance purchased the day before Ganesh Chaturthi cannot involve medical underwriting or waiting periods. Proposed guidelines:

Eligibility:

Age 18-65 years at entry, self-declared. No prior medical examination required for the stated coverage limits. Minors covered under a family floater without separate underwriting.

Automatic coverage inclusions:
  • Accidental death from any cause including crowd crush, drowning, electrocution, firecracker explosion, structural collapse, or road accidents at or travelling to/from a festival event
  • Permanent total disability arising from the same causes
  • Emergency hospitalisation benefit (fixed daily benefit or lump sum for hospital admission)
Standard exclusions:
  • Pre-existing conditions leading to natural death during the period
  • Death or injury from intoxication or substance abuse
  • Self-inflicted injuries
  • Participation in illegal activities
  • War or civil commotion (standard exclusion)
Coverage period:

Policy activates at 00:01 on the declared start date and expires at 23:59 on the declared end date. No waiting period.

Purchase process: Name, date of birth, mobile number, and Aadhaar/PAN number (for KYC). Policy document issued digitally within 60 seconds of premium payment. No agent involved; fully digital issuance.

Claim Requirements for speedy settlement

The product will see popularity only if claims are paid out promptly. Festival accidents involve verifiable public events, police FIRs, hospital records, news coverage. Claim documentation should reflect this:

For accidental death claims:
  • Death certificate
  • FIR or police inquest report (where applicable)
  • Post-mortem report (mandatory for unnatural deaths under Indian law)
  • Nominee’s KYC documents
  • Proof of relationship between deceased and nominee
  • Hospital records where the deceased was taken, if any
For disability claims:
  • Hospital discharge summary and treating doctor’s certificate specifying nature and degree of disability
  • FIR or police report
  • Photographs of injury (where available)

Target settlement time: 72 hours for straightforward claims supported by police report and death/disability certificate. Given that festival accidents are typically well-documented in public records and news, verification should be faster than for routine claims.

Digital submission: Claims filed digitally or via a broker. Surveyors/investigators deployed only for claims above ₹10 lakh or where the cause of death/injury is disputed.

Joy with protection

India’s festivals bring millions of people together in shared celebration. The risks that come with that concentration are documented, and recurring. A short-term festival life insurance product, in the event of a tragedy, could make the difference between financial survival and devastation.
