IRDAI’s Bima Trinity – easier, cheaper, digital insurance

Insurance in India is about to become simpler, more accessible, and affordable. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has introduced an innovative three-part strategy called “Bima Trinity” aimed at achieving the ambitious goal of “Insurance for All by 2047.”

What is Bima Trinity?

Bima Trinity is IRDAI’s comprehensive plan designed to transform insurance in India through three key initiatives:

  1. Bima Sugam
  2. Bima Vistaar
  3. Bima Vahak

Let’s understand what each initiative is about:

Bima Sugam

Imagine shopping for insurance just as easily as you shop for clothes or groceries on Amazon or Flipkart. That’s what Bima Sugam is about, a unified digital platform that simplifies buying, renewing, claiming, and managing insurance policies without hassles.

IRDAI recently established the Bima Sugam India Federation (BSIF) to oversee this platform. Soon, policyholders will enjoy quicker, smoother transactions and hassle-free claim settlements.

Bima Vistaar

If the complexity of multiple policies for life, health, property, and accident insurance confuses and stresses you out, the Bima Vistaar initiative will be a welcome solution. It bundles crucial insurance coverages – life, personal accident, property, and surgical hospitalisation, in a single, affordable bundle.

This simplified bundle is tailored especially for lower-income households. Industry sources estimate the premium to be around ₹1,500 to ₹2,000 per person for coverage of ₹2 lakh, making robust protection accessible to everyone.

Bima Vahak

India’s insurance penetration rate dropped from 4% in 2022-23 to 3.7% in 2023-24. Lack of awareness, particularly in rural areas, is one significant factor behind this decline.

To combat this, the IRDAI is introducing Bima Vahak, a women-centric, localized team designed to bring insurance awareness directly to people’s doorsteps. These trained professionals will assist customers with understanding their insurance needs, selecting the right policies, and simplifying the entire insurance experience. The phased rollout began in April 2025, ensuring that awareness reaches even the most remote areas.

IRDAI’s Bima Trinity initiative could revolutionize insurance in India. By combining technology (Bima Sugam), simplifying products (Bima Vistaar), and creating trusted community-based networks (Bima Vahak), IRDAI is actively addressing the common barriers to insurance adoption, bringing India significantly closer to its goal of ‘Insurance for All by 2047.’ With Bima Trinity, the future of insurance in India looks inclusive and accessible.
