18th June, 1583 – Life Insurance is Blind!
Or shall we say it is Lame, Deaf and Dumb too? The first ever life insurance policy was made in Royal Exchange, London on 18th June 1583. Almost 440 years later, we are still selling policies for Death, Disability, Critical Illness and Pensions. The Life Insurance thinking remained 440 years behind! Life Insurers ran out of imagination, products and purpose, making life insurance agent most unwelcome guest in any household.
For the Lame, Deaf, Dumb, Blind and the LGBT communities, there are no life insurance products! These communities have their own languages – Braille for the Blind, Sign Language for the Deaf and Dumb; their own colleges and universities; reservations in government jobs and specially designed toilets!
Their insurance needs never existed for us. The life insurers have no products to offer to people belonging to these communities. Other than lip service and garnering more profits, the Life Insurance Industry has done nothing for these members of the society. In any life insurer’s mind, even today, these people are inferior and hence substandard lives!!!
