Homeopathy – the H in AYUSH

Did you know that health insurance covers AYUSH treatments? AYUSH represents the five traditional systems of medicine practiced in India, namely: Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, Homeopathy. Each of these traditional systems has its unique approach to healing. Today we explore the origins and principles of Homeopathy.

The Principle of Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a system of medicine that gained popularity in the 19th century. It is based on the principle of “like cures like,” meaning that substances causing symptoms in healthy individuals can be used in small doses to treat similar symptoms in sick individuals.

Origins and Development

Homeopathy was introduced in 1796 by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann. His discovery was based on an experiment where he observed that a large dose of quinine, a treatment for malaria, produced malaria-like symptoms in his own body. This led him to conclude that diseases could be best treated using substances that induce similar symptoms in healthy individuals.

Hahnemann’s Experiments and Dilution Theory

Hahnemann conducted extensive experiments with various substances and found that:

  • Large doses of drugs could worsen illnesses.
  • The efficacy of medicines increases with dilution.
  • Homeopathy relies on minute doses of medicine to stimulate the body’s natural healing process.

Many patients and physicians embraced homeopathy as a gentler alternative to harsh medical treatments such as bleeding, purging, and heavy drug prescriptions.

Criticism and Global Presence

Today, homeopathy is often criticized for treating symptoms rather than underlying causes. However, it still has a dedicated following worldwide. Several organizations continue to promote homeopathy, including the International Homeopathic Medical League, based in Kothen, Germany.

Homeopathy in India

1937: The Government of India passed its first resolution recognizing homeopathy.

1952: Homeopathy started gaining formal recognition.

1973: The Homeopathy Central Council Act was passed, officially recognizing homeopathy as a legitimate system of medicine in India.

Homeopathy remains a significant part of alternative medicine in India and worldwide. With its focus on natural remedies and minimal side effects, it continues to attract supporters who believe in its effectiveness. The inclusion of homeopathy in health insurance under AYUSH makes it more accessible to people seeking alternative treatments.
