Health insurance for Supreme Court lawyers

In a new initiative, top Indian industrialists have come together to fund a ₹50 crore group health insurance plan for members of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) which was unveiled during the Supreme Court’s 75th anniversary celebrations.

The scheme, announced on May 22, 2025, is backed by major names including the Vedanta Group, Anil Ambani, Gautam Adani, Kumar Mangalam Birla, Lakshmi Mittal, Dhirubhai Ambani family etc.,  each of whom contributed between ₹5 to ₹10 crore!

What the insurance covers

The group insurance which is being provided by United India Insurance offers impressive benefits:

  • ₹2 lakh Sum Insured per family
  • Cashless treatment at over 15,000 hospitals
  • No waiting period for pre-existing conditions
  • Includes parents and in-laws
  • ₹50,000 maternity benefit for normal and C-section deliveries
  • Covers congenital issues, LASIK, and ambulance services

All of these are at no cost for members of the SCBA.

What makes this plan special?

Unlike most regular health insurance plans available to individuals or employees:

  • There are no exclusions for pre-existing conditions
  • It includes a wider family net (parents, in-laws)
  • Immediate and cashless accessibility nationwide

Compare that to standard policies, which often include waiting periods, co-payments, or sub-limits.

Is insurance funded by the private wealth the right model?

While the generosity of industrialists is commendable, there’s a broader question: should welfare for a key profession like lawyers of the Supreme Court rely on private wealth?

Pros:

  • No burden on public funds
  • Corporate goodwill and CSR opportunity

Cons:

  • Long-term sustainability is uncertain
  • Creates dependence on philanthropic intent
  • Other underprivileged professional groups may be left out
  • There is a chance that such funding might influence the working of the Supreme Court

A more balanced model could include both corporate support and public-private partnerships.

A step towards inclusive insurance

India still faces a low penetration of health insurance. Initiatives like these not only protect a vital profession but also spotlight the need for broader health protection policies.

This SCBA insurance initiative could inspire similar schemes for journalists, teachers, sanitation workers, and other critical but often underserved sectors.
