In January, 2023 a Telangana state secretariat official went to lengths to get his hands on Rs 7.4 crore life insurance amount from as many as 25 policies. To claim under these policies, he hatched a plan with his family to find a man who he shared some resemblance with, and then taking his life.
First the police registered the case as an accident. During investigation, the police noticed that the deceased driver’s body had been completely charred while his IDs were completely unscathed. Suspecting that the IDs were planted, the police began further investigations. After checking CCTV footage, and tracing call records, the police were able to arrest the accused Telangana state secretariat official.
This incident is reminiscent of a popular 2021 Malayalam film Kurup, where a character fakes his own death to get insurance money. The Movie Kurup tells the story of India’s most wanted fugitive Sukumara Kurup who has been missing since 1984. In this high-profile case Kurup murdered a person Chacko to get the insurance money on his own policy and fled the nation.
